Magnus Bäck is Professor of Cardiology at Karolinska Institutet and Senior Consultant at the Division of Valvular and Coronary Heart Disease at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm (Sweden). He received his MD in 1998 and PhD in 2001, and has previously been a fellow in cardiology and cardiovascular research at Bichat University Hospital and INSERM in Paris, France. He is presently the vice chair of the Working Group on Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology of the European Society of Cardiology and an editorial board member of Cardiovascular Research.
The work of Magnus Bäck’s research group ‘Translational Cardiology’ integrates studies of human tissues and cells using advanced molecular biology with observational cohort studies, biomarkers, and clinical trials. The translational research objectives are focused on the role of inflammation in cardiovascular diseases, such as aortic stenosis, acute coronary syndromes, and atherosclerosis, with specific emphasis on valvular and vascular calcification.
